残念だけど、僕の住む街では発売から2、3日遅れて届く。
普段は文芸誌の棚に近づくことなんて、ほとんどない。
「夏帆とシロアリの女王」。
ページを開いたら止まらなくなって、一気に読んでしまった。
150枚。短編というには長いけど、息切れせずに読めるちょうどいい長さ。
面白かった。
村上春樹、76歳で20代の女性を書く。すごいと思う。
母親でもある“シロアリの女王”と対峙する場面の台詞が、ヒリヒリするほど良かった。
タランティーノの「トゥルー・ロマンス」で、デニス・ホッパーとクリストファー・ウォーケンが向き合うあのシーンを思い出した。
あのくらい、会話の熱があった。
それにしても、村上春樹に馴染みのない人が冒頭の一行を読むと、
「シロアリの女王に身体を乗っ取られた母親」ってだけで、
スティーブン・キングのホラーを想像してしまうかもしれない。
キングが書く「シロアリの女王に身体を乗っ取られた母親」なら、
きっと最後は、母親の身体をシロアリがベリベリと内側から破って出てくるだろう。
いや、間違いない。
まるでジョン・カーペンターの「遊星からの物体X」みたいに。
……それはそれで、悪くない気もする。
I picked up the latest issue of Shincho, a literary magazine I don’t usually reach for.
In my town, new issues always arrive a few days late — a small delay that somehow makes the act of buying one feel more deliberate.
“Summer Girl and the Queen of Termites.”
Once I opened the first page, I couldn’t stop reading.
About 150 pages — long for a short story, yet light enough to read in one breath.
It was good. Really good.
Haruki Murakami, writing a woman in her twenties at seventy-six.
That alone feels extraordinary.
There’s a scene where the protagonist confronts the Queen — her own mother — and the dialogue burns with a strange, electric tension.
It reminded me of that moment in True Romance, when Dennis Hopper faces Christopher Walken.
That same kind of heat between words.
If you’re not familiar with Murakami, you might read the opening line and imagine something out of Stephen King —
a mother possessed by a termite queen.
And if it were King, the ending would probably be far messier:
the termites bursting from within, Carpenter-style, The Thing all over again.
Which, to be honest, wouldn’t be so bad either.
